"A reason for prayer: Too few priests for state's Catholics" (New Hampshire Union Leader & Sunday News) July 1, 2001.
FOR THE FIRST weekend in a century, there were no Masses at Sacred Heart Church in Milton this weekend. That's because a shortage of priests has caused the church to close its doors. This sad decision comes after four Catholic churches in Berlin were forced to consolidate and churches in Manchester have begun sharing priests. What can New Hampshire Catholics do to stem the decline in vocations? And,
Finally, the church as an institution might have more success recruiting men into the priesthood if it sticks to unwavering, absolute principles and does not try to change to please the times. Religious orders with conservative beliefs and practices have had more luck attracting new people than have lax orders in recent times. But as any Christian knows from personal experience, human efforts can only go so far. Without God's intervention, we won't solve the problem of declining vocations. So everyone who misses Sacred Heart this weekend — and everyone who wants to keep their own church doors open — please pray.
